    • _cfduid: This cookie for the Content Delivery Network (CDN) we use to function. The CDN speeds up our web pages and all those large images for you. We use CloudFlare to provide this service.

Travelshooters is committed to protecting customer privacy and takes its responsibility regarding the security of customer information very seriously. We will be clear and transparent about the information we are collecting and what we will do with that information.

This Policy sets out the following:

  • What personal data we collect and process about you in connection with your relationship with us as a customer and through your use of our website and online services;

“Travelshooters” (referred to as “we”, “us”, “our” or “Travelshooters” in this policy) in this policy primarily refers to Travelshooters Limited and, where appropriate, to other entities over which Travelshooters exercises management control. Travelshooters Ltd is the “data controller” of all personal information that is collected and used about Travelshooters customers for the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation. Travelshooters is registered in England with registration number 07597209 and registered offices at Farren House, Farren Court, The Street, Cowfold, Horsham, West Sussex, England, RH13 8BP.

Personal data means any information relating to you which allows us to identify you, such as your name, contact details, booking reference number, payment details and information about your access to our website.

We may collect personal data from you when you book a tour with us, use our website, or when you contact us.

Specifically, we may collect the following categories of information:

  • Name, home address, e-mail address, telephone number, passport or other recognised personal ID card numbers and details, credit/debit card or other payment details;
  • Passport details, which include your name, nationality, date of birth, gender, passport or ID number, expiry date and country of issue;
  • Medical conditions for clients who have special medical requirements and/or dietary requirements;
  • Information you provide about your and your fellow travellers’ travel preferences;
  • Information about your use of our website;
  • The communications you exchange with us or direct to us via letters, emails, chat service, calls, and social media.

Personal details about your physical or mental health, alleged commission or conviction of criminal offences are considered “sensitive” personal data under applicable data protection laws. We will process any such data only if you have given your explicit consent, or it is necessary (for instance if you request special assistance), or you have deliberately made it public.

Your data may be used for the following purposes:

  • Providing products and services you request: we use the information you give us to perform the services you have asked for in relation to your tour;
  • Contacting you in the event of an itinerary change or cancellation: we send you communications about the services you have asked for and any changes to such services. These communications are not made for marketing purposes and cannot be opted-out of;
  • Credit or other payment card verification/screening: we use your payment information for accounting, billing and audit purposes and to detect and / or prevent any fraudulent activities;
  • Administrative or legal purposes: we use your data for statistical and marketing analysis, systems testing, customer surveys, maintenance and development, or in order to deal with a dispute or claim. Note that we may perform data profiling based on the data we collect from you for statistical and marketing analysis purposes. Any profiling activity will be carried out with your prior consent only and by making best endeavours to ensure that all data it is based on is accurate. By providing any personal data you explicitly agree that we may use it to perform profiling activities in accordance with this Privacy Policy;
  • Immigration/customs control safety: we may be obliged to provide your information to border control agencies;
  • Security, health, administrative, crime prevention/detection:  we may pass your information to government authorities or enforcement bodies for compliance with legal requirements;
  • Customer Services communications: we use your data to manage our relationship with you as our customer and to improve our services and enhance your experience with us;
  • Provide tailored services: we use your data to provide information we believe is of interest to you, prior to, during, and after your travel with us and to personalise the services we offer to you, such as special offers to your favourite destinations or deals;
  • Marketing: from time to time we will contact you with information regarding promotions and ancillary products via e-communications. You will have the choice to opt in or opt out of receiving such communications by indicating your choice at the booking stage. You will also be given the opportunity on every e-communication that we send you to indicate that you no longer wish to receive our direct marketing material.

We will only process your personal data where we have a legal basis to do so. The legal basis will depend on the reasons we have collected and need to use your personal data for.

In most cases we will need to process your personal data so we can enter into our contract to deliver tour services for you.

We may also process your personal data for one or more of the following:

  • To comply with a legal obligation (e.g. Immigration or customs requirements);
  • You have consented to us using your personal data (e.g. for marketing-related uses);
  • To protect your vital interests or those of another person (e.g. in case of a medical emergency);
  • It is in our legitimate interests in operating as a tour operator (e.g. for administrative purposes).

Only children aged 16 or over can provide their own consent. For children under this age, consent of the children’s’ parents or legal guardians is required.

We will not retain your data for longer than is necessary to fulfil the purpose it is being processed for. To determine the appropriate retention period, we consider the amount, nature and sensitivity of the personal data, the purposes for which we process it and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means.

We must also consider periods for which we might need to retain personal data in order to meet our legal obligations or to deal with complaints, queries and to protect our legal rights in the event of a claim being made.

When we no longer need your personal data, we will securely delete or destroy it. We will also consider if and how we can minimise over time the personal data that we use, and if we can anonymise your personal data so that it can no longer be associated with you or identify you, in which case we may use that information without further notice to you.

We follow strict security procedures in the storage and disclosure of your personal data, and to protect it against accidental loss, destruction or damage. The data you provide to us is protected using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) technology. SSL is the industry-standard method of encrypting personal information so that it can be securely transferred over the Internet.

We do not request payment details (e.g. credit/debit cards) at any time. All payments we receive from our clients are done by inter-bank transfer using the security provisions of the international banking system. We do not hold any information about your bank account or credit cards.

We may disclose your information to trusted third parties for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy. We require all third parties to have appropriate technical and operational security measures in place to protect your personal data, in line with Irish and EU law on data protection rules.

Travelshooters is based in the UK. We deal with service providers who are not located in the European Economic Area (EEA), in countries such as India, Myanmar, Thailand and others. While countries outside the EEA do not always have strong data protection laws, we require all services providers to process your information in a secure manner and in accordance with EU law on data protection. We utilise standard means under EU law to legitimise data transfers outside the EEA.

We make every effort to limit any personal data so transferred to be the minimum necessary to deliver our services to you.

We will not share your personal data outside Travelshooters Ltd for marketing purposes.

We may share your personal data with the following third parties for the purpose described in this Privacy Policy:

  • Government authorities, law enforcement bodies, regulators, fraud screening parties, airports and airlines in your itinerary or to which your flight may fly over for compliance with legal requirements;
  • Trusted agents and suppliers strictly necessary to the purposes of your tour with us: for example, we may give your chosen accompanying photographer your phone number or email to facilitate communications relating to that tour, or a local tour partner so that they can provide the services we have contracted with them to provide on your behalf while on tour;
  • Legal and other professional advisers, law courts and law enforcement bodies in all countries we operate in in order to enforce our legal rights in relation to our contract with you;
  • Social media: You may be able to access third party social media services through our website or before coming to our website. When you are registered with your social service account, we may obtain the personal information you choose to share with us through these social media services pursuant to their privacy settings in order to improve and personalize your use of our website. We may also use social media plugins on our website. As a result your information will be shared with your social media provider and possibly presented on your social media profile to be shared with others in your network. Please refer to the privacy policy of these third-party social media providers to find out more about these practices.

Having regard to the limited scope and scale of personal data processing carried out by Travelshooters, we consider Travelshooters to meet the exemption provisions of GDPR regarding the appointment of a Data Protection Officer.

Travelshooters booking conditions

References to ‘you’ and ‘your’ below refer to passengers and travellers participating in a Travelshooters tour. ‘Us’, ‘our’ and ‘we’ refer to Travelshooters Limited trading as Travelshooters.

1. Deposit and final payment

1.1. For public group tours, a deposit of £750 per person is required at time of booking to reserve your place. This includes a non-refundable registration fee of £250.

1.2. For public group tours, payment of the balance of the tour price is due 90 days before the departure date.

1.2.1. If you don’t pay the balance in full at least 90 days before the departure date, we reserve the right to treat it as a cancellation by you — see below.

1.2.2. If booking less than 90 days before the departure date, the tour price must be paid in full at the time of booking.

1.3 For private tours, payment terms will be as determined during the tour planning process.

2. Cancellation by you

2.1. Must be done in writing by paper post (not by email or phone).

2.2. Will take effect on the date we receive your cancellation notification.

2.3. Following cancellation by you, our refund policy for public group tours is that if you cancel:

2.3.1. More than 120 days before the departure date, we’ll give you back your deposit less the non-refundable registration fee.

2.3.2. Between 90 and 120 days before the departure date, we’ll retain your full deposit.

2.3.3. Between 75 and 90 days before the departure date, we’ll retain 50% of the full tour price.

2.3.4. Less than 75 days before the departure date, we’ll retain the entire tour price you’ve paid.

2.4 For private tours, refund policy will be determined during the tour planning process.

3. Cancellation or alteration by us

3.1. We reserve the right to alter, cancel or withdraw any holiday or workshop.

3.2. We reserve the right to decline any person as a member of the tour for any cause at any time.

3.3. In the event an alteration or cancellation becomes necessary, you have the choice of:

3.3.1. Accepting the change

3.3.2. Taking an alternative available holiday from us and where this is of a lower price we will refund the difference and where this is of a higher price you’ll need to pay us the difference,

3.3.3. Withdrawing from the contract between us and accepting a refund of all money you’ve paid to Travelshooters. In this eventuality, and where cancellation is not due to under-booking or force majeure as defined below, we will pay you compensation on the following scale: more than 90 days before tour departure date — nil 60–90 days before tour departure date — £10 per person 30–59 days before tour departure date — £15 per person 15–29 days before tour departure date — £20 per person 14–0 days before tour departure date — £25 per person.

3.4. In all cases of alteration or cancellation we take no responsibility for any expenses incurred by you in conjunction with the altered or cancelled tour such as air-fares or other non-refundable arrangements. This is one reason why taking out travel insurance at the time of booking is mandatory — see below.

3.5. Underbooking occurs when the minimum number of bookings required to run a tour is not met. If we have to cancel a tour for this reason, we will do so more than 30 days prior to tour departure date.

3.6. Force majeure is unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, such as war or the threat of war, riots, terrorist activity, civil strife, industrial disputes, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, flood or adverse weather conditions.

3.7. We reserve the right to change any of the prices, service or other particulars contained on this website at any time before we enter into contract with you. If there is any change, we will notify you before we enter into such contract.

4. Flexibility

4.1. You appreciate and acknowledge that the nature of this type of travel requires considerable flexibility and should allow for alternatives. The itinerary provided for each tour is merely representative of the types of activities contemplated, and we are under no contractual obligation to strictly follow it. It is understood that the route, schedules, itineraries, amenities and mode of transport may be subject to alteration without prior notice due to local circumstances or events, which may include sickness or mechanical breakdown, flight cancellations, strikes, events emanating from political disputes, entry or border difficulties, climate and other unpredictable or unforeseeable circumstances.

4.2. In the unlikely event that we become unable to provide a significant proportion of the services you have booked after you depart, we will make alternative arrangements for you at no extra charge, or if this is impossible, we will provide you with transport back to the point of departure from your holiday destination, and a pro rata refund for the cost of the remainder of your holiday. In addition, if appropriate, we will pay you compensation of an amount which is reasonable taking into account the circumstances, and which is not covered by the terms of your own travel insurance.

5. Prices and surcharges

5.1. Prices quoted are based on a prevailing currency conversion rates. We reserve the right to impose surcharges (price increases) up to 60 days before departure due to unfavorable changes in exchange rates, increases in air fares or other transportation costs, increases in local operator costs, taxes, or if government action should require us to do so.

5.2. If any surcharge results in an increase of more than 10% of the tour cost excluding insurance premiums you may cancel the booking within 14 days of notification of the surcharge and obtain a full refund.

6. Airport transfers

6.1 Where airport/hotel transfers are included in the cost of the holiday, such transfers are only included when you travel on the flights specified by us. If you arrive or depart on different flights you will be responsible for your own transfer costs and arrangements.

7. Travel bookings

7.1 Bookings for travel to and from the start and end point of a tour are your responsibility and we are not responsible for these or any expenses, loss or other damage caused to you by the acts or omissions of the carrier.

8. Authority on tour

8.1. At all times the decision of our tour leader or representative will be final on all matters likely to endanger the safety and well-being of the tour. By booking with us the you agree to abide by the authority of the tour leader, who represents us. You must at all times strictly comply with the laws, customs, foreign exchange and drug regulations of all countries visited. You also agree to be bound by the our Responsible Travel guidelines.

9. Claims and complaints

9.1. If you have a complaint against us you must must first inform the tour leader or company representative whilst on the tour in order that the leader/representative can attempt to rectify the matter.

9.2. If satisfaction is still not reached through these means then any further complaint must be put in writing to us within 30 days of the end of the tour. We will not accept any liability for claims received after this period.

10. Responsibility

10.1. You acknowledge that the nature of the tour is adventurous and may involve a significant amount of personal risk. You hereby assume all such risk and do hereby release us from all claims and causes of action arising from any damages or injuries or death resulting from these inherent risks.

10.2. We and our agents act only in the capacity as agents in all matters pertaining to hotel accommodation, sightseeing tours, and transportation, and are not responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or injury to person or property resulting from a defect in any vehicle, or the actions of any persons who provide services for this tour or for the action or inaction of any third party. Baggage is at your risk entirely.

10.3. Airlines, railways, coach and shipping companies and other suppliers have their own booking conditions or conditions of carriage, and you will be bound by these as far as the relevant transport provider or supplier is concerned. Some of these conditions may limit or exclude liability on the part of the relevant transport provider or other supplier, and they are often also subject to various international conventions. Where relevant, copies of such conditions may be available for inspection at our offices, or at the offices of the relevant supplier.

11. Limitation of liability

11.1. We will accept liability for the negligence of our staff or agents causing death or physical injury to persons or loss or damage to personal property only to the extent it is obliged under English law. This acceptance of liability is subject to clause 11.3 below.

11.2. In other circumstances the company will be liable to the client for the proper performance of the contract. This acceptance of liability is subject to clause 11.3 below.

11.3. The company shall not be liable for any damage or loss if the failure to carry out the contract is:

11.3.1. attributable to the client

11.3.2. attributable to a third party unconnected with the provision of the services contracted for and the event is unforeseeable or unavoidable.

11.3.3. due to unforeseen and unusual circumstances beyond the company’s control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had to be exercised.

11.3.4. due to political disputes, border closures, refusal of visas, industrial action, climate or other matters of a similar nature and any other force majeure.

11.3.5. due to an event which the company, even with all due care could not foresee or forestall.

11.3.6. Any liability covered under section 11.2 is limited to the price paid. In the case of damaged property the liability is limited to a maximum amount equal to the amount paid by or on behalf of the owner of the property. In all cases the company specifically excludes all liability for indirect or consequential loss or expense including loss of profits.

11.4. Where your holiday arrangements involve travel by air, rail or sea, or hotel accommodation the compensation is limited by the following international conventions respectively: Warsaw Convention as amended 1955, Bern Convention 1961, Athens Convention 1974 and Paris Convention 1962. No compensation payable by the company for flight difficulties if you have available to you denied boarding compensation from the airline.

11.5. The Company’s acceptance of liability in clauses 11.1 and 11.2 above is subject to assignment by you to us of your rights against any agent, supplier or sub-contractor of ours which is in any way responsible for the unsatisfactory tour arrangements or your death or personal injury.

12. Optional extras

12.1. Optional extras do not form part of the tour or contract. It is understood and accepted by you that any assistance given by the tour leader or representative in arranging optional extras does not render us liable for optional extras. Amongst others optional extras include excursions, sightseeing flights and other extras not included in the tour price.

13. Your health

13.1. If you are affected by any condition, medical or otherwise, that might affect other people’s enjoyment of the tour, you must advise us at the time of booking. Should you fail to comply with the above or commit any illegal act when on the tour or, if in the opinion of the tour leader, your behavior is causing or is likely to cause danger, distress or annoyance to others we may terminate your travel arrangements without any liability on our part and you will not be entitled to any refund.

13.2. By forwarding a signed reservation form and trip deposit, you certify that you do not knowingly have any physical or other conditions of disability that would create a risk for you or other trip participants.

13.3. Once a trip has been confirmed, medical circumstances will not be considered as exceptions to our cancellation policy.

13.4. We assume no responsibility for medical care or for special dietary requirements.

13.5. If you have special dietary or other requests, you should inform us of these prior to departure. We will advise the relevant supplier of your requirements, but we cannot guarantee that such requests will be met, and will have no liability to you if such requests are not met.

14. Itinerary

14.1. Although Travelshooters works hard to make the itinerary as accurate as possible, tour itineraries should be considered an approximate schedule of activities rather than a rigid schedule of events.

14.2. Tour itineraries are subject to revision due to weather and prevailing tour conditions, government restrictions, and other reasons beyond our control.

14.3. The tour leader and Shoot Director have the right to make changes in the published itinerary whenever in their sole judgment conditions warrant, or if they deem it necessary for the comfort or safety of the tour.

15. Travel requirements

15.1. You must have a valid passport and all necessary visas, permits and certificates, including medical certificates required for the whole of the journey and you accept responsibility for obtaining the same. All information and advice given by us on visas, vaccinations, climate, clothing, baggage, special equipment etc is given in good faith, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions as to the information provided.

16. Travel Insurance

16.1. The cost of the tour does not include insurance.

16.2. It is mandatory that you obtain travel insurance with a minimum coverage of £50,000 while traveling with us and this insurance must cover personal injury, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, and evacuation expenses. It is strongly recommended the coverage be extended to include cancellation, curtailment, loss of belongings and all other expenses which might arise.

17. Limited insurance held by us

17.1. Where we, or any associated company, own or control the vehicles the company is covered by a policy but this cover is limited. If you require a higher level of cover then you must arrange extra cover. This insurance comes into effect only in the case of a vehicle accident and subsequent injuries; it is no substitute for your own travel and medical insurance which must still be taken. Where the company, or any associated company, does not own or control the vehicle cover is provided under our public liability policy.

18. Image usage, copyright and direct dealings with our Shoot Directors

18.1. Our photo holidays are leisure tours for amateur photographers. All images taken on our photo holidays are exclusively for reasonable private amateur use. No release forms are signed and no permission is given for professional, publication, agency, client or photolibrary use, or for any form of distribution of such images.

18.2 Our Shoot Directors are contractually bound not to participate in direct business dealings with clients introduced to them through their relationship with Travelshooters, including but not limited to future tours where Travelshooters is not the principal organiser. By joining one of our private or group tours, you agree to respect this contractual arrangement and not to approach any Travelshooters Shoot Director, lead photographer or tour service provider on a direct basis for a period of three (03) years after the end date of your last tour with Travelshooters.

19. Severability

19.1. In the event that any term or condition contained herein is unenforceable or void by operation of law or as being against public policy or for any other reason then such term or condition shall be deemed to be severed from this Agreement or amended accordingly only to such extent necessary to allow all remaining Terms and Conditions to survive and continue as binding.

20. Successors and assigns

20.1. These Terms and Conditions shall inure to the benefit of and be binding upon the Company and the Client and their respective heirs, legal personal representatives, successors and assigns.

21. Errors and omissions

21.1. Although we have made a concerted attempt to verify the accuracy of statements made herein the Company cannot be held responsible for any error, omission or unintentional misrepresentation that may appear in this brochure.

22. Privacy policy

22.1. We will provide your personal information, as well as any personal information you provide in relation to the persons whose travel arrangements have been requested by you, to suppliers and carriers to enable the operation of the services requested by you. We do our utmost to protect your personal information. Please see our Privacy Policy.

23. Consumer Protection

23.1. To ensure compliance with the Package Travel Regulations, we provide every customer from whom we receive a part or full tour payment with a certificate guaranteeing repayment of their funds in the event of the tour not being completed owing to the insolvency of our company.

24. Applicable law.

24.1. The contract including all matters arising from it is subject to English Law and the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts.

25. These conditions

25.1 By completing the booking form, you are agreeing to accept all the above conditions. The person who completes the booking form does so on behalf of all the individuals included on it, so that all are bound by the booking conditions.

  • Our photo tour prices are usually quoted on a room-sharing basis as well as a single-room basis.
  • Obviously if you’re coming with your partner or friend, you’ll pay the sharing price each and share a twin-bedded room (we’ll ask for a double if you prefer).
  • If you’re travelling on your own and definitely want your own room, you’ll need to pay the single price quoted. This will give you your own room on all nights (except, in rare cases, where it’s not physically possible, and we’ll tell you this in advance anyway).
  • If you’re travelling on your own and wish to share, we’ll do our best to pair you up with a group member of the same sex, obviously. If by the time you need to make your full payment (90 days before departure date) we haven’t found a suitable group member for you to share with, we’ll ask you to pay the single price rather than the sharing price. But all is not lost! — if we get a late booking in the run-up to departure which would enable you to share, and if we can work it with all the hotels involved, we’ll refund the extra cost to you with great pleasure.

Your Shoot Director designs and leads the tour and is responsible for tutoring, mentoring and guiding you through the shooting days.

The Shoot Director is free to change published itineraries around if he/she feels it’s advisable to do so.

The Shoot Director is also the sole authority on matters likely to endanger the safety and well-being of tour members.

On most tours, there’s also a separate Tour Coordinator who travels with the group. It’s the Tour Coordinator who is responsible for housekeeping-type issues, making sure arrangements work as planned and that you’re happy with all non-photographic aspects of the tour.

They’re professional photographers, usually well known and published, all with outstanding travel photography experience and a portfolio to die for. We insist on local experts: we don’t ask or allow photographers to lead tours in territories in which they do not have a considerable amount of shooting experience.

Usually, that means they’re locals — Indians in India, Turks in Turkey. Where that’s not possible, we still insist on pro shooters who are or have been residents, who speak local languages and are embedded in the local culture — or, at the very least, have been shooting there for years.

The big reason for this is, frankly, that local experts have the ability to deliver those privileged encounters and special shoot opportunities. They usually speak the local language, and that breaks the ice and gets us into the shots. And they know precisely how to connect you with the local people, customs and stories — and to do it in a respectful, responsible way.

Only when we’ve written to you to say the tour is definitely going ahead. Please don’t make airline bookings or other costly arrangements around the tour until you’ve received such notification. We know you want to press on and get fully booked, and the moment it’s safe to do so we’ll let you know. Usually, this means when we have achieved the minimum group number that the tour price is based on.

Please also be sure you know the exact start and end times of the tour (e.g. within-tour flights, trains or other transport returning to the tour end point). Please do also allow a bit of leeway when planning onward journeys, as all forms of transport can and do get delayed and can affect your onward plans if you have scheduled them too tightly around the tour.

If you do choose to purchase tickets or other arrangements before you’ve received the green light from us, please note that Travelshooters cannot reimburse those costs to you in the event the tour fails to go ahead for any reason. Please make sure your travel insurance policy covers you for such an eventuality.

It varies. You really need to check the Tour Details section of the tour. Airline tickets from your home to the tour start point are generally not included.

But, in general, these are inclusive tours: you won’t be asked to put your hand in your pocket for planned excursions, shot opportunities, etc. Just personal stuff.

On some tours, or parts of tours, we include lunches. But we like to be out shooting, not rushing back to the hotel for a midday meal, so you’ll often find lunches excluded. No point charging you for a feast when you’ll only be interested in a sandwich.

Worth noting: dinner is typically the most expensive meal of the day on photo tours like these, so wherever possible we make a point of including it within the price. If we were to exclude dinner from the price, we might be able to offer a superficially lower tour price but you’d be picking up a daily restaurant bill which could mount up significantly over the duration of the tour.

Again, check the details of the tour for specific inclusions or exclusions.

We operate a tipping kitty on our tours. Contributions are optional but convenient and we encourage you to contribute e.g. £25 or €30 or $40 once and for all, then forget about tipping for the rest of the tour. The entire kitty is distributed to the staff you deal with on the tour: driver, driver’s assistant, tour coordinator, guides, porters, doormen, etc.

There are several guiding principles, really.

We’re mad keen photographers ourselves and love the travel photography genre. We want Travelshooters to create the kind of photo holidays we would go on ourselves.

We believe amateur shooters deserve great holidays built around photography, to expose them to wonderful photographic opportunities in the company of like-minded new friends with the constant support, guidance and mentoring of a professional travel photographer.

Wherever possible, we don’t want to be ‘on the outside looking in’ when we travel. Now clearly this isn’t easy: you’re a stranger to the destination neighbourhood, after all. Even so, taking photographs by engaging with the local residents, showing them personal respect and personal interest beyond just being camera subjects, is where we’re at. We think the other way is too last century; we think our way produces better photo opportunities too.
For us, success is seeing you come back with images that delight you, and seeing that you had an amazing time on holiday.

Your Shoot Director will talk to you on the first day and get a good idea of where you’re at with your photography. Then, rather than running you through a fixed curriculum which would be bound to bamboozle some and bore others, your Shoot Director will help you all the way through the tour, tailoring his advice to your level of experience — out there, on location, where it will make the biggest difference and sink in most effectively.

Your Shoot Director will brief you before each major shoot opportunity. You’ll hear about what you can expect to encounter, how to approach it creatively and technically, what to watch out for. You’ll go in prepared!

And because our groups are small, you can expect a high degree of personal attention. If you want to take your Shoot Director aside for a one-to-one, just ask!

We typically do have group reviews and discussions, but these are informal-social rather than formal critiquing sessions, and they fit around the shooting rather than displacing it.

Eight people to a group typically. We often set sail with fewer, subject to minimum numbers for that tour.

It’s not a fixed number, it’s a business decision we take with each tour based on a variety of factors. We’ll tell you as soon as we’re good to go in terms of group numbers so you can firm other arrangements up. And if underbooking does occur, you’ll know at least 30 days before departure date. We might even ask you very nicely if we could charge a small supplement to ensure that the group tour goes ahead anyway; of course you’re free to decline and you’ll get your money back subject to our booking conditions.

It varies. You really need to check the Notes section of the tour.

Our general approach is to go for accommodation that serves our photographic mission and is equivalent to 3-star or perhaps 4-star class. In some cases, as in India, this can mean anything from a modest, uninspiring but well-located hotel to something you want to whip your camera out and take photos of for the folks back home.

Here are examples of the hotels we’ve used:

  • The Hans, New Delhi
  • Raj Mahal, Agra
  • The Rawla Narlai, Narlai

There are some places we go, as in Ladakh, where the available choices don’t conform with any particular star rating norm. There we use our common sense and when in doubt, we opt for the best hotels available.

In a few places or events (e.g. Pushkar Camel Fair, certain stops in Ladakh) the hotel accommodation you’ll be using will be fixed tents — not your intrepid backpacking-mountaineering sleeping-bag tents, but permanent or semi-permanent tented accommodation, with proper beds and furniture, hot and cold water, flush toilets, etc. They’re fun! — and we’ll always mention such exceptions in the tour descriptions.

If you’re the kind of shooter who wants to come home to 5-star, ultra-luxe, cost-no-object butler-and-jacuzzi suites after a hard day slaving over a hot camera, all is not lost: we can design a private tour for you and your private group that’s as upscale as you like.

All of our photo tours are wonderful explorations in their own right. Your partner should enjoy every moment of all our tours as much as anyone. If we know he/she’s coming, we’ll even suggest some fun things they might want to do in certain places while you’re out shooting: stuff like private sightseeing, arts and crafts visits, spa treatments.

You’ll need to:

  • Organise flights to and from the tour start and finish points (usually these points are the same)
  • Arrange any required visas
  • Complete any medical arrangements that might be necessary (e.g. inoculations)
  • Arrange (and show proof of) mandatory travel insurance. Please see our Booking Conditions for what the insurance needs to cover.
  • Join the tour at the time and place stated in the tour documentation.

Whatever you normally shoot with — and that includes your laptop if you’d normally take that on holiday with you.

Photography (and especially travel photography) isn’t about what hardware you’re carrying. In fact, the more kit you’re lugging around, the less agile you’ll be and the more likely you are to scare children and camels. But hey, we recognise that camera kit can be fun and creative, and you’ll find many kindred spirits on our tours!

The key is to have a fast, responsive, low-noise camera that lets you control the key technical variables: exposure, shutter speed, aperture and ISO sensitivity. If said camera also lets you pop on a different lens or two, so much the better. You’re good to go.

A very lightweight tripod is a good idea. It’ll help with any low-light landscape-type shooting we do.

Image storage

Your camera memory cards will fill up fast. Bring plenty! Some shooters also bring along a laptop to view and offload their images onto; others use a compact external hard drive. Please ensure you’re self-sufficient in this department as we can’t guarantee availability of these devices while travelling.

Most if not all of the hotels we choose offer internet access. Your tour notes, sent to you after your booking is confirmed, will tell you which hotels you’ll be using and what facilities (whether free of charge or extra-cost) they offer. (Ladakh tours are internet-challenged.)

There are way too many variables in the delivery of internet access for Travelshooters to make any promises about the reliability and speed of service in any country we visit.

Our photography tours are leisure experiences for predominantly amateur photographers. Professional photographers are very welcome (you need holidays too!) but the following points apply to all images taken on our photo holidays by any kind of photographer:

  • Our Shoot Director uses personal contacts, including friends and relatives, to organise many photo opportunities. For example, when we go into someone’s home to witness them celebrate a religious festival: this is a courtesy they have extended to us, not a commercial arrangement.
  • The human subjects in our photo opportunities are not professional models. No release forms are signed and no permission is given for professional, publication, agency, client or photolibrary use, or for any form of distribution of such images.
  • Reasonable private amateur use  (e.g. amateur competitions, prints, photo clubs, personal website, etc) of images you shoot on tour is fine. Use outside these parameters is not.
  • We do not claim any copyright over the images you shoot. We may request to use some of your images on our website and in our marketing; you’re free to decline to share.
  • Any photos taken during the tour which happen to feature you personally may appear on our website or in promotional material. If this absolutely horrifies you, please say so!
